Inside an Estimote Beacon

Patrick Carne /

We have been testing out a few different beacons lately, and were keen to see what the insides of an Estimate Beacon looked like. If you want to return your Estimote beacon back to its original state I do not recommend doing this, however we pried one open with a pocket knife and removed the thick plastic skin.

As expected, the beacon looks quite similar to other options on the market. The bulk of the beacon is made up of the 3v battery and a small chipboard. If you are wondering why the elongated shape of the Estimote, our guess is that the the antenna (on the narrow end) needs to be separated from the battery and other components to prevent signal blocking. Without being a hardware expert, I can see these devices getting smaller and smaller over time, and allowing for more discrete placement and integration with other devices.
